Nearly guarding the glade!

Good evening non readers and an even better evening to the readers of this blog! It's been a busy week or so since I last posted due to a big political event here. Needless to say I have been working away on my glad guard and referendums exponentially increase my productivity. Namely due to the fact I've locked myself away and am ignoring all of the slander and politics in the aftermath.

Anyway, on to happier things and I hope to have Base coated the command this week and perhaps even completed one of the glad guard. I am torn a little with enjoying the look of the Base layers and wanting to avoid messing it up by doing too much to them. See previous posts and please feel free to give advice.

I have ordered some glade guard to paint in a similar scheme and have a spellweaver to paint now too. I must admit that I love the autumnal theme and hope that I can produce mediocre (which I am terribly happy with) results with the other models too.

My thoughts for the army have strayed somewhat from a previous post and expect I will purchase some wardancers and dryads next, the dryads to give me a little break from the elven form. My imperial guard burnout is only just wearing off. Good thing too since I have a valkyrie, taurox, russ and baneblade to paint as well as heavy weapon teams and scions.

I have to say that painting wood elves has helped my enthusiasm for painting the guard now, I can see me bouncing between the two to maintain my enjoyment. I will try to keep these pages as free as possible from 40k unless requested otherwise.

In final news I acquired the wood elf magic cards as well as some nice terrain as seen in the pictures. It won't be long till my first outing with the wood elf host. I would buy the rules but am loath to with rumours of 9th and games workshops current release schedule.

Anyway, a bit of a boring wall of words but perhaps I'll do a wee bit on the glade guard kit and perhaps even be lucky enough to score a small game when I have the next two units.

Commission Painters Wood Elves of Autumn

Just been browsing youtube for a battle report to listen to while I paint and came across this video. The camera work is shaky and the focus isn’t great but I will link the guys website and hopefully this army will be up as part of his portfolio on the site soon. I like the colours he uses in some of the models and would love to see proper pictures of the wild riders, sisters of the thorn and a better image of most of the other units. Have a gander if you so wish -

Blog based buying, it's tough work blogging :)

Well day 4 of blogging and since the blog needs content (honestly, it was the only reason), I felt obliged to go out and acquire a couple things at the local GW store...

Unfortunately the local manager is moving to another store which is really great for him but I think I’ll enjoy going in a lot less as he will be hard to replace. Makes a big difference having someone that can bring you into the hobby and is relaxed and approachable. I remember as a kid struggling to stay in the GW store in Aberdeen since they were so loud. Anywho – I bought the army book and spellweaver/singer to read up on what I am going to be talking to you about and for my first Independant character in the host. I will use the mage for another gaming system which some friends are looking to get me playing, I think that no one wants to be the mage and they need one badly in their quests.

I am looking to paint this mage with the same autumn theme I intend for my army. If anyone reading has a great picture or idea for a warm orange/brown/red scheme for this model please pipe up in the comments and chat about it. I expect it will take me a while to paint as it has taken some time to base coat and wash two glade guard. I started numbers 3 and 4 and intend to have a unit of 12 in my initial list.

One other thing that I struggle with is that i have a small hand drill however it doesn’t seem to be able to hold the small drill heads that we use on models. I am looking to pin an imperial guard commisar to some cork for a nice base but am square wheeled until I can use the drill. I intend to magnetise a taurox and valkyrie (love the Valk model!!) so I may feature that in a less wood elfy post once I get it going. The guard should be taking up my time to get them ready for an armageddon themed game but there are only so many guardsmen you can paint! I didn’t want to start a horde army in Fantasy after playing guard in 40k.

If there are any units in the wood elf list that you would like to see me start on after the first glad guard unit, please feel free to comment and suggest some. At the end of the month I expect I will get another wood elf unit to try and reach the 500 point mark.

Happy hobbying folks, I’m off to paint more glade guard…

Treasure Troves

Evening folks,

Thought I should make an effort to have a bit of content for folks to browse although these first few might be a little boring until I find my feet or start to play small games/complete painting units.

First thing was a little treasure trove I uncovered looking through my old stuff - Ariel (I don't think I can even use her in this edition!?), a warhawk rider and the sisters on a dragon!!! Not too bad to boost my meagre single glade guard unit. I know that I can't use the dragon but its still a great wee find that it fits with the wood elves, tidy wee unit to paint when I am good enough. Unfortunately I am toying with buying a unit or the army book over the next few days (my poor wallet). I need to look at my army list though and decide what units to take. I had planned on this as the first 500 points of my glade guardians -

1xSpellsinger,

12 glade guard with Standard Bearer and musician,

5 wild riders, standard bearer

5 waywatchers, champion

=499 points

Any advice on the list would be great but I will look to build up a larger force sooner if I can. I can't wait to paint dryads/spirits and play the army itself. I may buy some glade guard since I am a fluffy player at the moment and love the wood elf autumn colour scheme (again in my head). I expect to use some warhawks as well as some wardancers and more glade guard. Dryads look fun to paint and I will buy them despite hearing bad things about them along with eternal guard and wildwood rangers. All in good time though.

I have popped up a picture of my lucky find along with the newest base coat of the second glade guard pre wash. If you see anything I should/could be doing better on the base coating let me know. Any help or advice is gratefully recieved. I posted a picture in my last entry of the model base coated and washed, I want to add some fiery orange to it perhaps but like how the colours seem to work well together so am a bit unsure about disrupting the 'smooth?' look of the colours, again any advice on this would be fab.

Thanks for reading,

JG

Baby steps in the wood...

Hi,

Welcome to this tentative blog. It’s not something I set out to do but having read http://cadiascreed40k.blogspot.co.uk for quite some time as well as having a wandering eye for the wood elves (I caved and bought them recently – why does an autumn themed army look so good in my head!?!?), I thought it might be a good way of tracking my progress, getting tips, constructive criticism and a bit of wood elf chat. I can even warn some poor souls over my tactical follies if I finally finish painting and get to playing.

At the moment I am new back into the hobby really and I am struggling through painting a horde of Imperial guardsmen, the wood elves are something different intended as a treat for getting through some more guardsmen. I am already planning a 500 point force as well as acquiring the army book. A bid has been placed on ebay for magic cards (the limited magic cards is a bit frustrating!) so by the time of publishing this I could be the proud owner of Wood elf magic and no spellcaster…. (pipped at the post by 50pence, a pestilence on ebay for foiling my winds of magic already, it doesnt bode well so far!)

Over the next wee while if I stick to this project I will update the blog with my progress, or lack thereof, with the wood elf host. I love the autumn colour scheme and hope that I can do it some justice. This is my first paint tester for the wood elf theme, base coated with a wash over the top to bring the colours together. I had some tips from a local painter about using the wash to draw the colours together and it has toned down the orange nicely. I am swithering between base painting the whole glade guard unit like this or pressing on to finish this model completely and be sure of my colours first.

If anyone reads this and has an inclination to make some suggestions please fire on, I’d be chuffed to hear from you.
